Week Four


In this weeks lectures Vesna showed us that art, technology, and medicine have always cooperated together. Although we don't always see these three go together, they really do. We first see how different advancements in the technology field have stemmed from art, like MRI's and X-rays. These inventions have helped save millions of lives over the years. The MRI is an example of how all three of these link together. When you get an MRI usually your whole body goes underneath a machine that scans your body, and then displays a picture of every bone and ligament that you have. The picture that we get from the MRI displays the art portion, the machine is the technology portion, and the ability to figure out what is wrong with your body from the picture is the medicine portion. This quote from an article from the aesthetics of MRI gives us a better understanding of what they really do for us regarding the technology and art fields"MRI images embody the human urge to view images of the body, of its interior and workings. This urge is motivated by a longing to be able to visualize something which lies beyond our senses in the hope of rendering it clearer." (Casini)

    I found this week's concept of medicine and art very interesting. I've always taken medical technology for granted and never really thought about how it uses artistic concepts! As you mentioned, the MRI scans the whole body and displays the scans through pictures. But not only is art incorporated through the images, but the structure of the MRI and the sound of the machine are all artistic factors. These are very important aspects in ensuring patient comfort. For example, the mirror placed in the MRI scan helps patients not feel claustrophobic.

    Before this week I never really made a connection between art and medicine but after seeing the art created from MRIs I totally saw the connection. It's fascinating how they can take an image from an MRI, and add color or other effects to it and create a piece thats essentially a thought or feeling a person had. I think this really gives meaning to the art because it's a real part of a person that we don't get to see very often.

Week 9: Space & Art Space is such an intriguing topic because there is so much out there in the galaxy that we know about, and other things that have not even been discovered yet. But, there is still so much that we can learn from space. In todays world movies are such a hit entertainment and is a form of art that everyone enjoys. The movie interstellar combines both space and art into one. This movie is about a man from NASA who wants to move all the people on Earth to a new home in space through a wormhole. What I found very interesting in this weeks lecture was the "Power of Ten" video. It is amazing how every ten seconds we are pushed further and further away from Earth until eventually the Earth is only a speck of light. But, then as the video zooms in back to earth we are able to see all of the atoms that are in cells and our body. Event 1

EVENT ONE When I signed up for this workshop I didn't know what to expect. Although, after attending I am very glad that I attended it. After searching for the building for at least 30 minutes me and a couple of friends also in the class finally found the event. When we walked through the door we were greeted by the instructor who sat us down in the hallway and we began talking about the society we live in. As we began to chat she informed us about the culture we live in today and how we are so dependent on man made products that we do not get to experience the true beauty that the world gives us. I began to realize that this was so true when I thought of what I rely on in my everyday life. I couldn't exactly name more than one thing that is not man made that I use on a daily basis.
