Week Six: BioTechnology+Art

During this week I have learned how biotechnology and art truly relate to each other. Biotechnology is technology that utilizes biological systems or living organisms to create products that benefit humans.

Over the last decade more and more artists have been giving up their studio suites in favor of laboratories. During this past decade more and more artists have become obsessed with bio-art, "artists have cultivated human tissue, bred frogs, assembled DNA profiles, and used modified bacteria as electric transmitters." (Miranda)

One particular thing I found super intriguing was the Audio Microscope that was created by Joe Davis, which allows the user to view a particular living cell while at the same time being able to listen to what is happening with that cell.

My favorite example from this weeks learning is from Katy High's Blood Wars. What the blood wars is it is a tournament between the blood of different people, where white blood cells fight the war in a dish. Then the donors of the winning blood receive a trophy. The people who participate in the war receive more knowledge of cell division, immune cells, and the different procedures used in the labs to study the blood.

This week I gained my own knowledge on how biotechnology is playing such a huge role in the world we live in today, and how artists in laboratories are paying huge parts of how we continue to understand the human body.

    I also found it pretty interesting on how biotechnology and art are connected. Its cool how you stated that many artists are finding themselves in laboratories. I think this is true as well. Also, I think the technology of the blood wars was fascinating. With art being incorporated in biology and technology, it's cool how they have new inventions like this to find new scientific discoveries.

Week 9: Space & Art Space is such an intriguing topic because there is so much out there in the galaxy that we know about, and other things that have not even been discovered yet. But, there is still so much that we can learn from space. In todays world movies are such a hit entertainment and is a form of art that everyone enjoys. The movie interstellar combines both space and art into one. This movie is about a man from NASA who wants to move all the people on Earth to a new home in space through a wormhole. Week Four In this weeks lectures Vesna showed us that art, technology, and medicine have always cooperated together. Although we don't always see these three go together, they really do. We first see how different advancements in the technology field have stemmed from art, like MRI's and X-rays. These inventions have helped save millions of lives over the years. The MRI is an example of how all three of these link together. When you get an MRI usually your whole body goes underneath a machine that scans your body, and then displays a picture of every bone and ligament that you have. The picture that we get from the MRI displays the art portion, the machine is the technology portion, and the ability to figure out what is wrong with your body from the picture is the medicine portion. Event 1

EVENT ONE When I signed up for this workshop I didn't know what to expect. Although, after attending I am very glad that I attended it. After searching for the building for at least 30 minutes me and a couple of friends also in the class finally found the event. When we walked through the door we were greeted by the instructor who sat us down in the hallway and we began talking about the society we live in. As we began to chat she informed us about the culture we live in today and how we are so dependent on man made products that we do not get to experience the true beauty that the world gives us. I began to realize that this was so true when I thought of what I rely on in my everyday life. I couldn't exactly name more than one thing that is not man made that I use on a daily basis.
