When I think of what two cultures that my life revolves around, its easy. Right here at UCLA there is a huge culture difference between students vs. student athletes. Being a student athlete here at UCLA you are grateful for so many things. We are so lucky to have some of the best professors in the entire world as well as some of the best coaches in the world. Athletics gave me an opportunity to receive such a great education. But, often times I find that there is a stereotype about us athletes. Often times I get told, "Oh, you are just here to play baseball" or "you are just majoring in baseball." Other times when I talk about the stressful workload that we have here at UCLA I get, "just have your tutor do it for you." I have even had some friends tell me that people walking around with the sports back packs are intimidating. We actually love when people who aren't other student athletes engage in conversations with us. So, please if you ever see me walking around campus do not hesitate to say hi. Most of the time this really bothers me because we put in just as many hours studying and playing sports that a normal student would do studying. So, we definitely put in the time and work. In the article from the LA Times, Goloman says, "glad to be done with it." This was after their NCAA tournament win, but he was not talking about the game, he was talking about a test that he had taken. In our lecture this week we are shown that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was a play writer and poet, but he also spent years purely in scientific research. Although that these two cultures are separated we see that with von Goethe and us student athletes at UCLA, these two cultures work together and one can be involved with both. These two different cultures directly have a big impact on my life that I never really realized.
